What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. “STEM education combines these areas in an integrated, problem-based approach to teaching and learning with an emphasis on critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.” (Forest Area Lake Schools)

  • Science: Includes: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Neuroscience, Physics, and more. (Social Science, such as psychology and sociology, is not included in STEM).

  • Technology: Includes: Computer Network Systems Engineer, Computer Science, Web/App Development, Coding, Cyber Security, and more.

  • Engineering: Engineering includes a long list of sub-fields such as Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical, Petroleum, Motor Sports, Mechatronics, and more.

  • Mathematics: Includes: Calculus, Data Science (which is cross-disciplinary), Logic, Algebra, Statistics, and more.

  • In the Science and Math Guided Pathway “M” includes Medicine: The STEM/Science and Math Counselors cover: Pre-medicine (Medical Doctor), Pre-veterinarian, Pre-dental (Dentist), Pre-physician Assistant, Pre-dietician/nutritionist, Pre-occupational Therapy, and Pre-optometry.

I struggle in math courses… is STEM for me?

Yes, STEM is for you! Struggling in math doesn’t mean STEM is not for you. Always remember that difficult, challenging, doesn’t mean impossible. Also, there are pathways in STEM that require fewer math courses than others. Explore your options with a Science and Math Counselor.

What is the job outlook for people with STEM Degrees?

How do I select which classes to take and which universities are best for transfer?

Meet with one of the Science and Math Counselors to discuss transfer universities and build a long-term education plan. The counselor will guide you on when you should meet for follow-up appointments and apply to transfer.

Is it manageable to work a full-time job while being a full-time STEM student?

No. It is recommended that STEM students not work. If you must work, keep the hours below 20 per week or cut back on your course load. Your Science and Math counselor will help you learn how to balance your job and class load.

What kind of organizations or clubs are available for STEM students?

Some of the recent clubs include chemistry, engineering, pre-physician assistant, computer science, white-hat hacking, space, outdoors (hiking), and robotics. It is easy to form clubs and you might consider starting one.
